UTR Pro Tennis Tour Recap: Zvonareva, Kozlov Win in January

December and January were huge months on the UTR Pro Tennis Tour, or PTT. Some big names won tournaments all over the world, snagging checks for $3,600.

The UTR Pro Tennis Tour was created by UTR Sports (formerly Universal Tennis) in 2021. Each $25,000 PTT event guarantees aspiring professional players prize money and multiple matches. Since 2023, matches have been aired live on Amazon Prime Video.

In case you missed it, two-time PTT champion Alex Michelsen put together a huge run at the Grand Slam level when he reached the third round at the 2024 Australian Open. The American won his two PTT titles in 2022 before rising up the ATP rankings.

Aussie Rolls in Melbourne

Omar Jasika picked up his first PTT $25K title just before Christmas in Melbourne before making his way through the qualifying draw of the Australian Open as a wild card entry. The 26-year-old Aussie qualified for the main draw, marking his first Grand Slam appearance since 2017.

Zonvareva Returns to Title Town

A famous face captured the Dubai PTT $25K title during the week of January 14-20. Vera Zvonareva, once ranked as high as No. 2 in the WTA singles rankings. She's currently No. 9 in doubles, having reached the US Open doubles final just last year. In Dubai, she won all six of her matches in straight sets. The 39-year-old holds 12 WTA titles but this marks her first on the PTT.

Kozlov Thrives in Mexico

Another former top-ranked pro, Stefan Kozlov, won in Manzanillo, Mexico to kick off his 2024 season. Though he dropped a set across the week, the 25-year-old dominated in the final, losing just one game. Kozlov is working his way back up the ATP rankings and was once as high as No. 103.

Teen Dominates in Boca

Akasha Urhobo has continued to thrive on the PTT. The 17-year-old won two titles in the last two months, both in Boca Raton. Local to the south Florida area, the American has won a whopping 18 Battle of Boca tournaments, which are held weekly at the same venue as the PTT events. She’s now won four PTT crowns.

YouTuber Starts 2024 with Milestones

Karue Sell is not slowing down one bit as he juggles pro tennis, coaching, and his YouTube channel My Tennis HQ. The 30-year-old Brazilian won the Long Beach PTT $25K during the first week of January. The title is Sell’s fourth since starting his comeback to professional tennis last year. Before the month's end, Sell captured his first ITF title at a M25 in Ithaca, NY.



Frey Wins Big in Newport

In case you missed it, Anna Frey won her first PTT tournament in Newport Beach in December, around the time she was going viral on TikTok for looking like San Francisco 49ers NFL quarterback Brock Purdy. The 16-year-old followed her first-place finish in Newport with a run to the final of the Girls’ 18 USTA National Winter Championships.
