Universal Tennis Announces UTR Dingles Championships at BNP Paribas Open

Universal Tennis will host a three-day UTR Dingles event in Indian Wells, Calif., spearheaded by former world No. 2 Tommy Haas

Palo Alto, CA - Today, Universal Tennis is announcing plans to host the UTR Dingles Championships with Tommy Haas at the BNP Paribas Open on March 16-18 in Indian Wells, California.

The championship comes on the heels of Universal Tennis adding UTR Dingles to its platform. The company behind the gold standard UTR Rating is on a mission to grow the sports of tennis and pickleball through innovative events, a global digital marketplace, and level-based play.

The UTR Dingles Championships is one of many fan experiences Universal Tennis will host during the BNP Paribas Open. The activations include the UTR College Match Challenge showcasing USC and Pepperdine, the Universal Tennis Foundation Hurd Award recipients announcement, and a demo court featuring Universal Tennis and Tennis Warehouse throughout the duration of the BNP Paribas Open.

Competing on Stadium 4 of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, 12 current and former pro players will team up to participate in the three-day UTR Dingles Championships, spearheaded by Tommy Haas. The teams will be competing for prize money.

“I absolutely recommend UTR Dingles to everyone. We will showcase it during the second week of the BNP Paribas Open. Come out and join us to watch it and play it. Together with Universal Tennis, it’s going to be absolutely amazing.” said Haas, the BNP Paribas Open tournament director and UTR Dingles spokesperson.

Participants include 18-time Grand Slam champion Mike Bryan and USC’s highest-ranked doubles team of Stefan Dostanic and Bradley Frye. Haas will compete with Gregg Hill.

Here is how the game works. To start, two players on the same team feed in cross-court rallies and play out half-court points. When a cross-court singles point ends, the winning team calls out, “Dingles!” Using the ball that is still in play, the point immediately evolves into a normal full-court doubles point. A team must win both balls to score a point.

For the UTR Dingles Championships, the format will be as follows. Two teams will receive byes and two quarterfinal matches will be played on Thursday, followed by two semifinal matches on Friday, and the final on Saturday to crown the winner. The scoring will be best 2 out of 3 sets, with each set to 7 points (a sudden death point will be played at 6-all).
